Myrrh For A Dead God?By James Smith

"And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury." (John 19:38- 40 KJV)
Upon His death, Nicodemus came to Jesus' tomb and he and Joseph of Arimathaea, wound the body of Jesus with linen clothes and 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes. This amount of burial myrrh and aloes would have been an extreme even for a wealthy person. The usual custom was to use 20 pounds.
Think of this with me. If any of you have ever baled hay on a farm, you know that a bale of hay weighs around 60-70 pounds. This bale being compacted and compressed into some sort of shape by a baler. In Jesus' day, there were no such machine. They would have had to carry this in a sack of sorts. Imagine the scene of Joseph carrying the roughly 175 pound body of Jesus and Nicodemus carrying the huge sack with 100 pounds of myrrh and aloes for the burial.
Putting myself into this text, I find two men who loved Jesus. Enough, that they would risk their own life to see that the Lord would receive they very best burial they could give. So, Joseph donates his very expensive tomb and Nicodemos, not wanting anyone to smell the decomposing body of Jesus, brings 100 pounds of costly burial aloes. When people walked by the tomb, he wanted them to only notice the beautiful smell of the myrrh and not the rotting flesh of a dead God.
I'm not sure where these two were doctrinally at this point, but I do know that they heard the truth preached to them by the Lord himself. However, I'm not so sure they got what Jesus tried to get them all to understand. "(John 2:19 KJV) Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."
People often quote John 11:35, "Jesus Wept". Recently at a funeral of 2 friends, the minister referred to the Lord as a mourner who also wept at the funeral of His friend Lazarus. I don't believe Jesus wept because his friend was dead. He sure was not too concerned when they told him about Lazarus being sick a few days prior. I am certain that the reason Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend is because of the unbelief of those whom Jesus had spent much time with, trying to convince them that He was the Resurrection. How many funeral processions did Jesus stop to raise the dead? He had proven to all of them that He was able to raise the dead. I believe He went to the tomb of Lazarus hoping to find Mary and Martha sitting in wait, full of faith that regardless of how long it took, Jesus would show up and when He did, He would raise His friend to life again. Jesus did not weep for Lazarus's death, he wept because of the faithlessness of Mary and Martha . Hear his rebuke to them, (John 11:25 KJV) "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"

How To Increase Giving In Your Church - Part 1

In his book "How To Increase Giving In Your Church", George Barna gives several key principles for effective stewardship. Our challenge is to create an enviroment and facilitate a mind-set in which people want to donate money to the church for the right reasons. The following are some guidelines toward achieving that outcome.
You are raising money for Life Transformation, not Organizational Survival. Your objective must be to advance the cause of ministry, not to perpetuate the survival of an institution. God can make great things happen in people's lives without an organization through which such ministry happens. Focus on the essential: Seeing lives changed for the glory and purposes of God.
People give to people and causes, not to institutions or programs. If you want to inspire people to become good stewards, help them see themselves as ministers. Their giving is a means of using their resources for the very reason they exist: to know, and serve God with all their hearts, minds, souls and strength. Encourage people to give to the church because it provides opportunities and means of helping people.
Repeat donors must be both inspired and persuaded. Great fund-raisers know how to identify the soft spot that inspires people to give generously. Eliciting such support is more than just finding a "hot button"; it initials penetrating both the head and the heart of the donor. Your goal should be to create a stewardship mind-set. You do not want to have to start from scratch every time you need money; you want to build on a foundation you have worked hard to develop, one that is based on trust, integrity and mutual benefit.
There is no substitute for absolute integrity. None! Honesty, transparency, accessibility - these are the characteristics on which a great stewardship campaign - and genuine, life changing ministry - are based. Integrity is not something to be fooled with. lose it and you will pay a major price for an extended period. Once the people's trust has been violated, the relationship cannot be restored until many years have passed and the donors who were hurt by the infraction are gone. Ministries cannot outlast that era.

A Few Good Things To Know About People

A Few Good Things To Know About PeopleBy Author Unknown
Showing your compassionate and caring nature will aid you in forging successful relationships.
When you extinguish hope, you create desperation.
Remember that your followers generally want to believe that what they do is their own idea and, more importantly, that it genuinely makes a difference.
If you practice dictatorial leadership, you prepare yourself to be dictated to.
Delegate responsibility and authority by empowering people to act on their own.
When you make it to the top, turn and reach down for the person behind you.
You must be consistently fair and decent in both the business and personal side of life.
Never add the weight of your character to a charge against a person without knowing it to be true.
Never crush a man out, thereby making him and his friends permanent enemies of your organization.

How To Lead Critics

How To Lead CriticsBy James Smith
Get up before they get up. If you are lazy and don't get started on things until the last minute, your critics will have already accomplished an alternative less effective way of doing things.
Do your homework - Study the situation. Don't take other peoples word for it. Research the problem and with God's help, find the best solution.
You run the meetings - Never let anyone but you or someone you desire, to run a meeting. If they take the platform, shut them down. Don't let them take over the meeting. Never walk into a meeting without knowing the direction and result that the meeting will bring.
Know the trouble makers past - Find out what makes that person tick. Why are they the way they are? Knowing more about them will enable you to understand why they feel the way they feel about things and enable you to change them.
Share your vision with others before your critic gets the opportunity to share theirs. These are busy little people and they work hard at spreading their opinions. Work harder! Have coffee meetings where you tell others your dreams and vision. Go to congregants homes unexpectedly (As your critics do.) and open your heart to them.
Be confident. No one wants a sissy for a Pastor. (Sorry if that sounds demeaning, but I've seen some.) Don't be bullied. Be strong. Know your calling. Walk tall. Square your shoulders. Lead! People will follow. You may lose some critics along the way, (Let them go!) but you will gain a congregation who will follow you into revival.

Something's Broke In The Church!

Something's Broke In The Church!

No, it's not a water pipe or a window.  But it's making lots  of noise and spilling a big mess everywhere.  "Bang Bang Clang Clang.  Do you hear it?"

What's broke in many churches today is the Brotherly Love that Jesus said would be the identifier to the world that we are His.

At times we can hardly get folks to stand together long enough to sing in the choir on a Sunday evening.  Much less come together in prayer for the sake of revival and souls in the community.  This was a real issue for the Corinthian church too.  We know this because Paul took an entire chapter to deal with it.

When a church is bound together with Love, it can do great things for God, but when that same element is missing, strife can rule and reign in a church.

"People say they love me, but when it gets down to the heart of the matter they don't really show it". How do we deal with that? How do we deal with the fact that we just have bad people in the church? KICK THEM OUT!!!!!!!! No! We deal with the root of the problem and we fix what is broken. - Excerpt from the Bang Bang Clang Clang series.

This is exciting stuff. If you need a little help in preparing your next message, take a look at www.PreachIt.org today. You will be very glad you did.
P.S. The above Power Point image packs are only a few of the many that have been added to the site in the last week. Please use them to welcome your congregants this holiday season and give beautiful imagery to your next sermon.

Have a great week!

When Parental Guidance Slumps To Parental Negligence Reference: Genesis 33:17 Description: There are times in parenting that the huge dilemma is trying to figure out when to give in and when to give out.

What The Devil Does Not Want You To Know About Hope Reference: 1 John 3:1 Description: When one delves into this thought of hope, there are some characteristics about hope that the devil does not want a saint to be aware of.

How Hope Purifies Reference: 1 John 3:1 Description: Purification gives rise to thoughts of holiness and sanctification. Interestingly, in the previous two chapters, John has prevailed with the thought that doctrine matters because it influences our thinking and thinking affects the way that we live our lives.

The Power of Hope Reference: 1 John 2:28 Description: Every saint of God can have complete confidence in their relationship with God. Confidence (2:28) comes from the hope (3:3) that is in him which leads him to walk in great godliness and holiness.

The Marks of the Saint and the Marks of the Defector Reference: 1 John 2:19 Description: The passage that we come to indicates that there are some who came in but time proved that the Spirit was only allowed to have a limited impact in their life. While a real conversion did take place, a sense of perseverance never entered the life of this man and the journey was forsaken.

The Cardiology of Worldliness Reference: 1 John 2:5 Description: This matrix of evil is how the devil and his demons have entire control over all sinners who are part of the kingdom of the world.

The Saint and the Spirit of Antichrist Reference: 2 John 2:18 Description: John is writing and stating that this spirit of antichrist is one that is against Jesus Christ and His church or a more subtle approach is getting one to use anything as a substitute for Him.

Why A Saint Cannot Love The World Reference: 1 John 2:15 Description: Gently and slowly it seeks its way into the heart, and hardens it day by day, even while the possessor of that heart may be more or less unconscious of the change that is going on. This is backsliding. Sin permitted, the heart gradually hardened, unbelief taking his place on the throne, and then, departure from the living God. Well, that's all for now. Have a great weekend!Kindest Regards,

James Smith

Focus On Farming Series

Please find below, Lesson 1 of 5 from the Focus On Farming Series available on PreachIt.org. The Focus On Farming Series authored by Pastor T.R. Kelley is a series of 5 lessons complete with teaching notes, handouts and a beautiful Power Point image pack. These lessons deal with 5 principles necessary for any church to maintain and grow exponentially.
1. Breaking Up Your Fallow Ground
2. A Sower Went Forth To Sow
3. A Heart For The Harvest
4. Unreaped Fields
5. Patience In The Harvest

SERIES: Focus On FarmingLESSON 01 - BREAKING UP YOUR FALLOW GROUND
BIBLE READING: JEREMIAH 4:3
Any good farmer will tell you that before one can grow any kind of a garden, one must first plow up the ground where the garden will be.- It is only after the plowing that one can begin the process of sowing and reaping.* So, with that in mind, we will begin our Focus on Farming series.
Jeremiah 4:3 - For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.
I. INTRODUCTION
A. BREAK UP YOUR FALLOW GROUND
One very important lesson we must learn from these passages focuses on the phrase, "break up your fallow ground," is that fallow ground is either that which, having once been tilled, has long lay uncultivated; or, it is ground that is slightly plowed, in order to be plowed again before it is planted (or sown).
The Church breaks up her own fallow ground, when she stirs up anew the decaying righteousness of her own members...

PASTORAL NOTE: One should not be satisfied with a slight furrowing of the heart; rather, let the land that was fallowed (slightly plowed) be broken up again with a deep furrow of true repentance. In other words, one must not be satisfied with a mere stirring of the heart - there must be a true change of thought and life.
Fact is, too many of us have been long uncultivated in righteousness...
It is time to let true repentance break up our fruitless and hardened hearts; and...
When this is done - and when the seed of the Word of Life is sown in them - worldly cares and concerns will not arise and choke out the good seed like thorns.IMPORTANT: Jeremiah warns that one should not sow the seeds of repentance in unfit soil, but just as the farmer prepares the ground, by clearing it of weeds, and exposing it to the sun and air, before planting the seed, so must you regard repentance as a serious matter, requiring forethought, and anxious labor. To sow in ground that has not been properly plowed one might as well sow on land that is full of thorns - it is time and effort wasted.
